How is Rolfing different than Massage Therapy?

When I meet someone and tell them I'm a Rolfer, I'm often asked, "How is Rolfing different than massage?" This is an important question.

There are at least 4 ways that Rolfing is distinct from massage:

The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration (RISI) is the sole certifying agency for Rolfing. The training that I received at the RISI was more than enough to be licensed thru the state of Oregon as an LMT. However, LMTs are not able to practice as Certified Rolfers unless they undergo this extensive training.

The specialized training that I received at the RISI covers how to perceive and understand structural differences between people and within one person from session to session. I learned how to evaluate where there is unnecessary strain in someone's structure. I'm trained to see the underlying structural strains that lead to the symptoms that often bring someone to my office.

In order to address structural imbalances I apply a specific type of touch. This can be light or deep but always connects with the fascial tissues that lace throughout the body and give the body it's shape and structure. My job is to untie the knots, release the strain, and restore clients to a more natural and neutral alignment. I focus on structural change, not only muscular release. Clients often experience the work as creating deep change in their body and sense of self.

The result is that clients feel the relief of an unbound physical structure. They easily stand taller, walk, run and bend with less effort. Clients often report sensations of lightness, better balance, more energy and general well-being. They are able to more fully engage in the life they choose.

If I were a gem cutter, my job would be to help polish and smooth out the places that are making you dull so that you can shine as brightly as you want. It is a wonderful job and I love what I do.
